Who's your superhero?

Another 5Top piece on MSNBC — this one on the most inspired superhero casting. It was designed to coincide with the opening of IRON MAN because I was thinking of putting Robert Downey, Jr. on the list, but the studio didn't make the film available before the piece was due. The screening is tonight (and anyway I've got French), and the piece was due yesterday, and I didn't want to hold it up on the off-chance that I liked Downey and IRON MAN enough to include it.

No supervillains. That's a whole other category and would include Gene Hackman and Ian McKellan and Alfred Molina and probably, eventually, Heath Ledger. Off the top of my head.

Good comments... I cast my ballot for Tobey M, as the perfect Peter Parker, though Reeve is also a good option. I'm not as big on Christian Bale as you are; I'm not down on him either, but he didn't blow me away or anything. When Keaton was cast in '89, the thought was that he could never pull it off and he did, so in a way that was more impressive.

Obviously, I haven't seen IRON MAN yet, but when I saw Robert Downey was cast as ol' Shellhead I thought it was perfect. Who better than a real-life alcoholic to play Tony Stark? :-)

You didn't mention anyone from MYSTERY MEN, which of course is not a "serious" super-hero movie, but Ben Stiller and Hank Azaria were pretty damn funny.
