Luis Tiant, Minnesota Twins, 1970

The piece on the Atlanta school system was amazing, and... sadly not the the least bit surprising. It shows that the things that are wrong/broken in America right now are not just messing us up in the here and now. The future is in far worse trouble if we can't fix the education system.

This was to be one of Obama's highest priority concerns, but then the global financial meltdown hit, and he had to shelve it (and with these Republicans, I don't know what he could possibly do to fix it anyway - perhaps reverse psychology??).

Reed, I'm glad you read it. I hope everyone does. I actually teared up a bit at the end. And there's a quote in there that will be a future QOTD.

To be honest, it's not just a lesson for our school system but for our culture, which is increasingly corporatized and data-driven. It's all about the quantity and never about the quality. People are more and more judged by the numbers while corporations are more and more judged as “people.” To quote Bunk: Shit is fucked.
